Study Notes

Biology 341: Intro to Neurophysiology - Fall 2015

  • Course Goal: Understand the nervous system from a functional perspective, including ion channels, electrical excitability, synaptic function, and information processing.
  • Textbook: "From Neuron to Brain" 5th Ed., Nicholls et al., Sinauer © 2012 (ISBN: 9780878936090)
  • Learning Goals: Students will be able to understand electrical and chemical signaling between nerve cells, experimental and theoretical approaches to studying neurophysiology, fundamental principles of how the nervous system encodes information, and critical thinking and communication skills related to interpreting experimental data.
  • Grading:
    • Participation & Weekly Quizzes: 25%
    • Midterm Exams: 30%
    • Final Exam: 30%
    • Homework Assignment: 15%
    • Grading Scale: A (88.1-100), B+ (80.1-88), B (73.1-80), C+ (66.1-73), C (60.1-66), D (50.1-60), F (0-50).
  • Important Policies:
    • Academic integrity is strictly enforced.
    • Cell phones and electronic devices are prohibited during class and exams.
    • Valid medical excuses require documentation.
    • Course repetition is limited to four attempts (including withdrawals from another institution). The lowest grade is excluded from the cumulative GPA if the course is repeated or transferred.

Course Schedule (Partial)

  • Week 1: Introduction and course overview; neurons, glia; morphological and molecular diversity
  • Week 2: Membrane potential (Nernst Equation, GHK equation), passive properties, length constant, time constant
  • Week 3: Action potential – ionic mechanisms; Hodgkin-Huxley formalism, propagation, myelination
  • Week 4: Diversity of voltage-gated channels
  • Week 5-7: Electrical and chemical transmission, gap junctions, synapses, crayfish escape system, frog neuromuscular junction
  • Week 8-11: Transmitter release, types, synthesis, transport, re-uptake and degradation, postsynaptic receptors, synaptic plasticity (short-term/long-term)
  • Week 12-15: Sensory transduction, coding principles (visual, somatosensory, auditory, chemosensory); motor coding; posture and movement control. Midterm Exam I, Midterm Exam II, and Final Exam.
