Bereavement Leave Policy

  • Bernalillo County Fire and Rescue provides bereavement leave for employees who experience the loss of an immediate family member or a like relative of the employee's spouse.
  • Employees should contact the Staffing Battalion Commander or Division Chief for specialty assignments to request bereavement leave.
  • Leave will be granted for the amount of time requested by the individual, based on the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for union personnel or the Rules and Regulations for non-union personnel.
  • Both the CBA and Rules and Regulations are available on the Bernco Insider.

Requesting Bereavement Leave

  • Employees are required to complete the "Emergency Leave Request Form", which is located in TargetSolutions File Center > BCFD > FORMS > HR Forms or through the Bernco Insider > HR > Emergency Leave Request.

Returning to Work

  • Employees must provide documentation that shows proof of familial relationship on the Emergency Leave Request Form.
  • Sick leave will not be converted to bereavement leave until the completed Emergency Leave Request Form with appropriate documentation is received by the Deputy Chief of Administration or designee.
  • Officers will work with their personnel to ensure that documentation is complete and submitted appropriately.
  • Documentation should be submitted to the Deputy Chief of Administration or their designee immediately upon the employee's return to work via mail run or electronically.
