Study Notes
Behavioural Variation
- Behavioural variation is important for understanding how organisms adapt to their environments
- Behavioural syndromes are consistent patterns of behaviour that are linked to individual differences in personality, temperament, etc.
- Behavioural types are individual variations within a syndrome with a particular combination of behaviours
- For example, an individual’s behaviour might be categorised as ‘bold’ or ‘shy’, according to whether its behaviour is explorative or not
- This is important because it can shape the evolutionary trajectory of a particular species
Intraspecific Variation
- Empirical approaches that enable tests of intralocus and interlocus conflict, include controlled experiments and observational studies
- These can be used to investigate how different behaviours contribute to the survival and reproductive success of individuals
Evolutionary Conflict
- Evolutionary conflict can occur when different selective pressures act on different traits to promote the fitness of either the male or female parent, which can result in a ‘tug-of-war’, where the opposing forces are not always in agreement
- For example, in beetles, sexual selection can lead to the evolution of increased male reproductive competitiveness, which can be harmful to females
- In turn, females can evolve resistance traits that offset the harm caused by males
- In an experimental evolution study, conducted on beetles, a researcher altered the operational sex ratio (OSR) over 20 generations
- They started with one population and split it into 6 replicate subpopulations; 3 exposed to female-biased OSR and 3 exposed to a male biased OSR
- The population exposed to female-biased OSR showed low levels of sexual selection and low competition between males
- The population exposed to male-biased OSR showed high levels of sexual selection and high competition between males
- This demonstrates how changes in the OSR can drive the evolution of traits, and this can be used to experimentally test the impact of these changes on both males and females.
