- Sanitising: reducing the number of microorganisms to a safe level
- Disinfection: eliminating many or all pathogenic microorganisms, except bacterial spores
- Sterilisation: destroying all forms of microbial life, including spores
Sanitising and Sterilising Steps
- Cleaning tools and implements:
- Remove debris with a brush
- Wash with soap and water
- Rinse and dry with a clean, lint-free towel
- Disinfection:
- Soak in an EPA-registered disinfectant for the recommended time (usually 10 minutes)
- Rinse and dry thoroughly
- Sterilization (if required):
- Autoclave: place cleaned and disinfected tools in an autoclave at 121°C for 15-20 minutes at 15 psi pressure
- Dry Heat Sterilizer: set to the appropriate temperature and duration (typically 160°C for 2 hours)
