Hand Signals for Referees

  • Show a red card for penalty 7 (EXPULSION)
  • Show both cards jointly for expulsion 8 (DISQUALIFICATION)
  • Show red and yellow cards separately for disqualification 9
  • End of match: cross the forearms in front of the chest, hands open
  • Ball not tossed: lift the extended arm, the palm of the hand facing upwards
  • Delay in service: raise eight fingers, spread open
  • Blocking fault: raise both arms vertically, palms forward
  • Rotational fault: make a circular motion with the forefinger
  • Ball in: point the arm and fingers toward the floor
  • Ball out: raise the forearms vertically, hands open, palms toward the body
  • Catch: slowly lift the forearm, palm of the hand facing upwards
  • Double contact: raise two fingers, spread open
  • Four hits: raise four fingers, spread open
  • Net touched: indicate the respective side of the net
  • Reaching beyond the net: place a hand above the net, palm facing downwards
  • Attack hit fault: make a downward motion with the forearm, hand open

Basic Volleyball Rule Violations

  • Consecutive contacts: a player cannot hit the ball 2 times consecutively except when blocking
  • Four hits: a team cannot hit the ball 4 times before returning it
  • Assisted hit: it's illegal for a player or object to assist a teammate in playing the ball
  • Catch: it's illegal to catch or throw the ball, the ball must rebound from the hit
  • Ball crossing the net outside the crossing space: the ball must cross the net within the crossing space
  • Reaching over the net: attacking when the ball is completely on the other side of the net is illegal, except in 4 specific situations:
    • After 3 contacts
    • After the ball is attacked
    • The ball is coming over and there isn't anyone there to make a play
    • Other situations specified by the referee
