Study Notes
Volleyball Basics
- A team consists of six players, divided into three players in the front row and three players in the back row.
- The game starts with a serve, which is taken from behind the end line on the volleyball court.
- Each team is allowed to touch the ball three times before it must return to the other side of the net.
- If a team touches the ball for a fourth time, the play is dead, and the opposing team scores a point.
Scoring Points
- Points are scored when the volleyball lands "in" on the opposing team's side of the court.
- Points are also scored when the opposing team hits the ball "out", which includes landing out of the court boundaries, hitting the antenna, or making contact with the ceiling.
- If the serving team wins the point, they continue to serve; if they lose, the opposing team becomes the server.
Game Rotation and Ending
- Teams rotate clockwise when they become the servers, which means one front row player becomes a back row player and vice versa.
- The game ends when one team scores a designated amount of points, usually 25.
Court Violations
- A player cannot hit the ball two consecutive times.
- Contact with the ball must be instantaneous; players cannot catch or hold the volleyball.
- Under the net violation occurs when a player reaches over or touches the net, or steps over the center line.
Out of Rotation and Back Row Attack
- Out of rotation occurs when a player serves out of rotation or is not in rotation during the opposing team's serve.
- A back row attack occurs when a player attacks the ball over the net while they are in the back row.
Libero Restrictions
- A libero player cannot attack the ball over the net, regardless of their court position.
- A libero player cannot overhand set a front row attack while standing in front of the ten-foot line.
- A libero player is not allowed to block the ball.
Net Violations
- A player cannot block a serve; they must allow the opposing team's serve to come over the net.
