Study Notes
Haemophilus influenzae
- Haemophilus influenzae is commonly known as the 'Blood-lover' and Pfeiffer's Bacillus.
- The most common type of Haemophilus influenzae is nontypeable.
- Nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae can cause otitis media, conjunctivitis, and exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Infections and Symptoms
- Haemophilus influenzae can cause bacterial meningitis, which can lead to inflammation of the epiglottis, characterized by symptoms such as fever, sore throat, and difficulty swallowing.
- The growth of Haemophilus influenzae requires a heat-labile factor, NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide).
Cultivation and Identification
- Haemophilus influenzae can be cultivated on Levinthal or Fildes agar.
- Haemophilus ducreyi, when viewed under the microscope, appears as a "school of fish" or "railroad track" arrangement.
Other Haemophilus species
- Haemophilus ducreyi is commonly known as Koch Week's Bacillus and can cause purulent conjunctivitis.
- Haemophilus aegyptius is responsible for Brazilian purpuric fever, characterized by high fever and fatal sepsis.
Bordetella
- Bordetella bacteria do not require NAD for growth.
Sexually Transmitted Infections
- Haemophilus ducreyi can cause a sexually transmitted disease characterized by the appearance of single or multiple lesions that develop into sharply circumscribed, nonindurated, painful ulcers in the genitalia and perianal areas.
Normal Flora
- Haemophilus species are part of the normal flora of the mouth and nasopharynx and can cause endocarditis.
