  • Limited Supplemental Type Certificate, or LSTC

STCs

  • It is an engineering package for adding new equipment or modifying a factory-built aircraft.
  • Applies to a specific aircraft model.
  • The STC ensures modification or system approval by the regulatory authority, and establishes continued airworthiness.
  • It can be exclusively "owned" by the STC holder, who may sell these to AMOs to carry out on other aircraft.
  • It’s equivalent to a patented design with electrical and structural engineering drawings.

Manufacturer Held STC

  • When a manufacturer holds an STC for a major system like an autopilot, it may sell the conversion kit.
  • Another possibility is the manufacturer allowing a vendor to use the STC at no additional cost.

LSTCs

  • An LSTC differs from an STC for a specific aircraft or a limited number of aircraft.
  • The "Limited" refers to the aircraft serial numbers where the approval applies.

Standard 571.12 (AWM) Major Modifications

  • Major repairs or major modifications to the type design must be reported.
  • In accordance with CAR 571.12 if specified in an STC or LSTC.

  • Drawings and methods recommended by the manufacturer of the aircraft or component
  • TC advisory documents
  • Advisory documents issued by a foreign airworthiness authority
  • Specified Data includes:
  • Drawings or methods described or referenced in ADs
  • Manufacturer issued Modification Orders, Service Bulletins
  • FAA AC 43.13-1 and AC43.13-2
  • Approved Data includes:
  • Type certificates, STCs, LSTCs, CAN-TSO repair design approvals
  • Drawings and methods approved by the Minister

  • Type Certificate

  • Canadian Technical Standard Order (CAN-TSO) design approval

Part Design Approval

  • This Division applies in respect of the issuance of a part design approval for a replacement part that is intended to be installed on an aeronautical product
  • It also apply to applicants for and holders of a part design approval in respect of a replacement part.
  • Applicants for a part design approval in respect of a replacement part shall have or have access to the technical capability to conduct the design analyses and tests required to demonstrate the conformity of the replacement part with its certification basis.

CAN-TSO

  • It is a standard of airworthiness for an appliance or part
  • It is also published by a foreign state with which Canada has an airworthiness agreement or similar arrangement and that is adopted by the Minister and specified in Chapter 537.
