AANZFTA Negotiations and Signing

  • ASEAN, Australia, and New Zealand leaders agreed to launch AANZFTA negotiations on November 30, 2004, at the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand commemorative summit in Vientiane, Lao PDR.
  • Negotiations commenced in March 2005 and took 16 rounds over 4 years.
  • AANZFTA was substantially concluded in August 2008 in Singapore.

AANZFTA Signing and Entry into Force

  • AANZFTA was formally signed by ministers from all 12 participating countries on February 27, 2009, in Huan Hin, Thailand.
  • The agreement entered into force for 8 signatories on January 1, 2010: Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Myanmar, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam.
  • The agreement entered into force for Thailand on March 12, 2010, Lao PDR on January 1, 2011, Cambodia on January 4, 2011, and Indonesia on January 10, 2012.
