Study Notes
The Integumentary System
- The protective covering of the body, consisting of skin, hair, hooves, claws, horns, and feathers.
- Functions:
- Physical protection
- Prevention of dehydration
- Body temperature regulation
- Provides sensory information through touch
- Metabolic activity (Vitamin D production)
- Waste excretion (sweat)
The Skin
- The largest organ of the body
- Composed of three layers:
- Epidermis (outermost, avascular layer)
- Dermis (corium, layer with blood vessels)
- Subcutaneous layer (hypodermis, composed of adipose tissue)
Epidermis
- The outermost layer of skin
- Composed of 5 layers:
- Stratum basale
- Stratum spinosum
- Stratum granulosum
- Stratum lucidum
- Stratum corneum
Dermis
- The layer directly deep to the epidermis
- Also called the corium
- Layer where blood vessels start to be found after incision
Hypodermis
- Located deep to or under the dermis
- Composed primarily of adipose tissue
- Having fewer blood vessels means that medication injected subcutaneously is absorbed more slowly
Associated Structures
- Glands:
- Sebaceous glands (produce sebum for lubrication of the skin)
- Sweat glands (secrete watery fluid containing salts and waste products)
- Hair:
- Covers almost the entire surface of the body of most domestic animals
- Variations include whiskers, mane, switch, mohair, cashmere, wool, and feathers
- Beaks/bills:
- Projecting mouthpart of birds
- Feathers:
- Body covering of avian species
- Two basic types: vaned feathers and down feathers
- Horns:
- One of the usually paired bony processes that arise from the head of many ungulates
Test your knowledge on the anatomy and physiology of farm animals, focusing on the integumentary system. Learn about the protective covering of animals' bodies, including skin, hair, hooves, claws, horns, and feathers, as well as its functions such as physical protection and prevention of dehydration.
