    Study Notes

    The Integumentary System

    • The protective covering of the body, consisting of skin, hair, hooves, claws, horns, and feathers.
    • Functions:
      • Physical protection
      • Prevention of dehydration
      • Body temperature regulation
      • Provides sensory information through touch
      • Metabolic activity (Vitamin D production)
      • Waste excretion (sweat)

    The Skin

    • The largest organ of the body
    • Composed of three layers:
      • Epidermis (outermost, avascular layer)
      • Dermis (corium, layer with blood vessels)
      • Subcutaneous layer (hypodermis, composed of adipose tissue)

    Epidermis

    • The outermost layer of skin
    • Composed of 5 layers:
      • Stratum basale
      • Stratum spinosum
      • Stratum granulosum
      • Stratum lucidum
      • Stratum corneum

    Dermis

    • The layer directly deep to the epidermis
    • Also called the corium
    • Layer where blood vessels start to be found after incision

    Hypodermis

    • Located deep to or under the dermis
    • Composed primarily of adipose tissue
    • Having fewer blood vessels means that medication injected subcutaneously is absorbed more slowly

    Associated Structures

    • Glands:
      • Sebaceous glands (produce sebum for lubrication of the skin)
      • Sweat glands (secrete watery fluid containing salts and waste products)
    • Hair:
      • Covers almost the entire surface of the body of most domestic animals
      • Variations include whiskers, mane, switch, mohair, cashmere, wool, and feathers
    • Beaks/bills:
      • Projecting mouthpart of birds
    • Feathers:
      • Body covering of avian species
      • Two basic types: vaned feathers and down feathers
    • Horns:
      • One of the usually paired bony processes that arise from the head of many ungulates
