The Nature of Environments
- Designing a rational agent requires specifying the task environment.
- Specifying the task environment (PEAS):
- Performance measure (how to assess the agent)
- Environment (elements around the agent)

- The first step in designing an agent is specifying the task environment (PEAS) completely.

- Fully observable: Agent's sensors provide access to the complete state of the environment at each point in time.

Partially observable: Noisy and inaccurate sensors or missing parts of the state from sensor data.
- Examples: Vacuum cleaner with local dirt sensor, taxi driver

Deterministic: The next state of the environment is completely determined by the current state and the action.
- Uncertainties are not present in a fully observable deterministic environment.
- Examples: Chess, deterministic while taxi driver is not

Stochastic: The next state of the environment is not completely determined by the current state and the action.
- Examples: Taxi driver (because of actions of other agents). Parts of the environment can be deterministic.

- The simplest environment is fully observable, deterministic, episodic, static, discrete and single-agent.
- The real world is usually partially observable, stochastic, sequential, dynamic, continuous and multiagent.
The Structure of Agent
- Agent = agent program + architecture
- Agent program: Implements the agent function to map percept sequences to actions.
- Architecture: Computing device with physical sensors and actuators. Should be appropriate for the task (e.g., legs for walking)

- Architecture makes percepts available to the program.
- Program runs.
- Program's action choices sent to the actuators.
Agent Program
- All agents have essentially the same skeleton
- Agent takes current percept from sensors, and returns action to actuator.
Types of Agents
- Four basic agent kinds: Simple reflex, model-based reflex, goal-based, utility-based.
Simple Reflex Agents
- Agents select actions based on the current percept, ignoring past history.
- Example: Vacuum agent decides based on current location and dirt status.

- Agents use condition-action rules.
- Example: If car in front is braking then initiate braking.

- Agent program: Agent program takes percepts as input, and uses the rule-match function to find the first rule that matches the current internal state
- Using INTERPRET-INPUT, it then generates an abstracted description of the current state from the percept.
Model-based Reflex Agents
- Maintain an internal state reflecting past percepts (to handle partial observability).
- The internal state is updated based on both the new percept and knowledge of how the world evolves
- The internal state includes the agent's previous actions and their effects on the world
Model-based Reflex Agents (cont'd)
- The program needs knowledge about how the world evolves, and how the agent's actions affect the world.
- This knowledge is called a model of the world.
Goal-Based Agents
- Agents have goals, and choose actions that achieve those goals.
- Agents consider the results of actions to determine which actions best advance their goals.

- Goal-based agents can be contrasted/compared to reflex agents
- Goal agents are more flexible
- Their knowledge is explicitly represented
Utility-Based Agents
- Utility functions map states to real numbers (representing happiness).
- Agents choose actions that lead to states with the highest utility.

- Agents can improve their performance over time by learning from feedback.
