  • Arnold Schoenberg was born in 1874 in Vienna, Austria.
  • By age nine, he was already playing the violin and composing in 1883.
  • At 17 in 1891, Schoenberg began working in a bank to support his mother and pay for his music studies.
  • By 1894, he joined the orchestra Polyhymnia and met Alexander von Zemlinksy, later became a conductor and chorus master.
  • Aged 24, Schoenberg converted from Judaism to Protestantism in 1898.
  • Schoenberg taught at Schwarzwald School in 1904; his students included Alban Berg and Anton Webern, who used the 12-tone system in their compositions.
  • From the age of 38 in 1912, Schoenberg traveled in Europe and Russia as a conductor and lecturer; the premiere of Pierrot Lunaire in Berlin was a success.
