    • The dictation portion of this standard operating procedure (SOP) is applicable to all staff that gross tissue specimens (staff pathologists, resident pathologists and pathologist assistants). The transcription portion of this SOP is applicable to all personnel assigned to the Department of Pathology and Area Laboratory Services (DPALS).

    • The dictation portion of this SOP is designed to provide an efficient means of dictating surgical reports to furnish accurate and timely transcription of material.

    • The transcription section provides dictating capability to the Department of Pathology and Area Laboratory Services (DPALS).

    • All staff must read and adhere to the stated guidelines and procedures as applicable. Personnel assigned will perform daily tasks utilizing the step-by-step instructions delineated in sections VI thru VIII of this SOP.

    • The responsibility for dictating tissue specimens falls on the staff pathologist. The resident pathologist/staff pathologist for whom the specimen is being dictated is identified in the first batch of dictations. After dictating and sending the last batch of the day to the transcription queue for transcription, the staff pathologist presses the “stop” button to close out for the day.

    • The transcription section provides dictating capability to the Department of Pathology and Area Laboratory Services (DPALS).
