- Each acceptable specimen received in Histology is grossly examined by a resident, PA, or staff pathologist.
- The purpose of this operating procedure is to provide guidance in the preparation of tissue samples for gross examination.
- Specimens can be fresh or formalin-fixed, and tissue samples with Standard Form 515/MHS GENESIS (MHS) GENESIS requisition are acceptable.
- Technicians are trained on all instruments/methods applicable to their assigned duties prior to working independently.
- The procedure is started by selecting specimens from the holding baskets to build trays for gross examination.
- Tissue cassettes ( Various colors) are used for identification and/or computer accession number verification.
- The quality of the tissue samples is checked at each step of the process and any discrepancies are resolved.
- The Grossing Area Good Catch Log (AP-HIS.A202) is used to document the training and competency assessments of technicians.
- There will be four resident grossers, each responsible for grossing tissue samples from five specimens each.
- When there is a shortage of pathology assistants, residents are expected to assist.
- Oral Pathology Surgery (OPS) tissue samples will be accessedioned for the staff pathologist.
- Pathology Assistant (PA) will gross biopsies and other small, unoriented tissue samples.
