Anatomical Position and Body Orientation
- Anatomical position: body upright, facing observer, feet flat and forward, arms at sides, palms facing forward.
- Supine position: lying face up.
- Prone position: lying face down.
Directional Terms
- Directional terms describe the location of body parts relative to each other.
- Anterior: at or near the front of the body.
- Posterior: at or near the back of the body.
- Midline: imaginary line dividing the body into right and left halves.
Additional Directional Terms
- Medial: nearer to the midline.
- Lateral: away from the midline.
- Superior: toward the head; upper part of a structure.
- Inferior: nearer to the feet; lower part of a structure.
- Deep: away from the body's surface.
- Superficial: close to the body's surface.
- Proximal: nearer to the origination of a structure.
- Distal: farther from the origination of a structure.
Planes of the Body
- Planes are imaginary flat surfaces that segment the body.
- Frontal (Coronal) Plane: divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) portions.
- Transverse Plane: divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) portions.
- Sagittal Plane: divides the body vertically into right and left portions.
- Midsagittal Plane: divides the body vertically into equal right and left sides.
- Parasagittal Plane: divides the body vertically into unequal right and left sides.
- Oblique Plane: passes through the body at an angle.
