Anxiety Disorder
- Characterized by inappropriate fear or worry, and physical anxiety manifestations that are disproportionate to the stressor.
- Symptoms significantly interfere with daily life.
- Includes panic disorder, phobias, generalized anxiety disorder, and selective mutism.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
- Persistent anxiety lasting at least 6 months, unrelated to a specific person, situation, or event.
- Results in functional impairment.
- Associated with three or more of the following: restlessness, fatigue, poor concentration, irritability, muscle tension, impaired sleep.
- Chronic, excessive, difficult to control, and causes significant distress or impairment.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Caused by exposure to a prior trauma (death, serious injury, rape).
- Characterized by persistent symptoms including hyperarousal, avoidance of associated stimuli, intrusive re-experiencing of the event (nightmares, flashbacks), changes in cognition or mood (fear, horror, distress).
- Symptoms last at least 1 month and significantly impair social and occupational functioning.
- Combat veterans and sexual assault survivors are at high risk.
Somatic Symptom and Related Disorders
