    Study Notes

    Parturition and Postpartum Recovery

    • Parturition is the biological process of giving birth in mammals, marking the end of pregnancy.
    • It involves three distinct stages:
    • Stage 1: Dilation and contractions, cervical dilation, and animal preparation.
    • Stage 2: Fetal expulsion, stronger contractions, and ANIMAL REPRODUCTION.
    • Stage 3: Placental expulsion, after the birth.

    Newborn Care

    • Not well developed circulatory and respiratory systems:
    • Initiation of lung respiration due to stimulation of respiratory center in brain by inc. CO2 level.
    • Thermoregulatory mechanisms:
    • Not well developed, reduced survival in extremely hot or cold environment.
    • Absorption and metabolism of nutrients:
    • Glycogen stored in liver and muscles, used during this adjustment period.
    • Immune status:
    • Immune system of neonate not challenged, maternal antibodies absorbed through intestines until 24 hrs after birth.
    • Colostrum should be fed as early as possible, 6% of birth wt within 6 hrs.

    Postpartum Recovery

    • Factors affecting recovery:
    • Reproductive readiness, breeding intervals, and postpartum issues.
    • Common postpartum complications:
    • Metritis, mastitis, etc.
    • Management strategies:
    • Returning to reproductive readiness, treatment, and management.

    Other Important Points

    • Evaluation of pregnant animals and management of post-partum animals.
    • Pre-weaning management and milk collection.
    • Identification of animals at LPA with any diseases related to reproductive failure.
