    Study Notes

    Testes Location and Function

    • Testes are situated outside the abdominal cavity within a pouch called scrotum.
    • Scrotum helps maintain a low temperature (2-2.5°C lower than internal body temperature) necessary for spermatogenesis.

    Testes Structure

    • Each testis is oval in shape, approximately 4-5 cm long and 2-3 cm wide.
    • Testis is covered by a dense covering.
    • Each testis has around 250 compartments called testicular lobules.

    Testicular Lobules

    • Each lobule contains one to three highly coiled seminiferous tubules where sperms are produced.
    • Seminiferous tubules are lined with two types of cells: male germ cells (spermatogonia) and Sertoli cells.

    Cell Functions

    • Male germ cells undergo meiotic divisions to form sperm.
    • Sertoli cells provide nutrition to the germ cells.
    • Leydig cells (in interstitial spaces) synthesise and secrete androgens (testicular hormones).

    Male Sex Accessory Ducts

    • Seminiferous tubules open into vasa efferentia through rete testis.
    • Vasa efferentia leave the testis and open into epididymis located along the posterior surface of each testis.
    • Epididymis is part of the male sex accessory ducts, along with vas deferens.
