Anatomy of the Heart
- The heart is a muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body.
- It is roughly the size of a fist.
- Located in the mediastinum, between the lungs, behind the sternum.
- The heart has four chambers: two atria and two ventricles.
- The right atrium receives deoxygenated blood from the body.
- The right ventricle pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs.
- The left atrium receives oxygenated blood from the lungs.
- The left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood to the body.
- The heart has four valves: two atrioventricular valves (tricuspid and mitral) and two semilunar valves (pulmonary and aortic).
- These valves ensure one-way flow of blood through the heart.
Heart's Function
- The heart's primary function is to pump blood throughout the body, delivering oxygen and nutrients to the tissues and removing waste products.
- This is accomplished by rhythmic contractions of the heart muscle, called the cardiac cycle.
- The cardiac cycle consists of two phases: diastole (relaxation) and systole (contraction).
- The heart rate is controlled by the sinoatrial (SA) node, often called the heart's pacemaker, located in the right atrium.
- The SA node generates electrical impulses that stimulate the heart muscle to contract.
- The heart rate can be influenced by factors such as hormones, emotions, and physical activity.
Blood Circulation
- The circulatory system is a closed loop system, with blood constantly circulating throughout the body.
- Deoxygenated blood returns to the heart via the vena cava.
- From the right atrium, blood flows to the right ventricle.
- The right ventricle pumps the blood through the pulmonary arteries to the lungs.
- In the lungs, blood picks up oxygen and releases carbon dioxide.
- Oxygenated blood returns to the heart via the pulmonary veins.
- From the left atrium, blood flows to the left ventricle.
- The left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood through the aorta to the rest of the body.
- The blood delivers oxygen and nutrients to the tissues and gathers waste products for removal.
Coronary Circulation
- The heart itself needs a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients.
- This is provided by coronary arteries, which branch off from the aorta.
- Coronary arteries supply blood to the heart muscle.
- Blockages in the coronary arteries can lead to angina (chest pain) or myocardial infarction (heart attack).
- These blockages can be caused by atherosclerosis (accumulation of plaque in the arteries).
Heart Sounds
- The sounds of the heart are produced by the closing of the heart valves.
- "Lub-dub" is the typical sound of a healthy heart.
- The first sound ("lub") is produced by the closing of the atrioventricular valves.
- The second sound ("dub") is produced by the closing of the semilunar valves.
- Abnormal heart sounds (murmurs) can indicate valve problems or other heart conditions.
Factors Affecting the Heart
- Diet, including saturated fats, cholesterol, and sodium intake, can influence the health of the heart.
- Physical activity, by promoting circulation of blood and strengthening the heart muscle, is essential for heart health.
- Stress can increase blood pressure and heart rate.
- Obesity, high blood pressure and/or diabetes increase the risk of heart problems.
- Smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease.
- Age and family history also contribute to the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
