    Study Notes

    Anatomy of the Cardiovascular System

    • The pericardium is a covering layer that surrounds the heart, consisting of two parts: fibrous and serous.
    • The fibrous pericardium is a tough, loose-fitting, and inelastic sac around the heart.
    • The serous pericardium has two layers: the parietal layer (lining inside the fibrous pericardium) and the visceral layer (epicardium, adhering to the outside of the heart).
    • The pericardial space, located between the visceral and parietal layers, contains a few drops of pericardial fluid.
    • The function of the heart coverings is to provide protection against friction, with the fibrous pericardial sac having a smooth, well-lubricated lining.

    Valves of the Heart

    • The heart valves are mechanical devices that allow blood flow in one direction only.
    • There are four sets of valves essential for the normal functioning of the heart.
    • The right atrioventricular valve has three flaps, making it also known as the tricuspid valve.
    • The left atrioventricular valve has two flaps and is also known as the bicuspid or mitral valve.
