Study Notes
Cells and Tissues
- Cells are the smallest units of living matter
- Cells form tissues
- Tissues join together to form organs
- Organs work together to form systems
Organs
- Organs can be hollow (cavities) or solid
- Hollow organs have a lumen (cavity)
- Walls of hollow organs have multiple layers (tunics)
- Innermost layer called the mucosa (viscera) or intima (blood vessels)
- Middle layer is the muscularis
- Outer layer is the adventitia
- Solid organs have a capsule, stroma, and parenchyma
- Capsule is a layer of connective tissue
- Stroma is the supporting tissue
- Parenchyma is the functional tissue
Body Planes
- Body position uses three main planes (sagittal, transverse, frontal) used in anatomical studies
- Sagittal plane divides the body into left and right halves
- Midsagittal plane divides the body into equal halves
- Frontal/coronal plane divides the body into front and back sections
- Transverse plane divides the body into upper and lower sections
