- Arms at the side with palms facing forward
- Feet slightly apart
Directional terms
- Medial: Closer to the midline of the body
- Lateral: Further away from the midline of the body
- Proximal: Closer to the point of attachment of a limb, or closer to the center of the body
- Distal: Further from the point of attachment of a limb, or further away from the center of the body
- Anterior (ventral): Nearer to the front of the body
- Posterior (dorsal): Nearer to the back of the body
- Superior: Nearer to the head
- Inferior: Further from the head
Body planes
- Three planes are at right angles to each other
- Divide the body into sections
- Enable visualization and description of the body’s internal arrangement from various perspectives
- Use the anatomical position as a reference
Oral perspective
- The dorsum of the tongue is the upper surface
- The ventral surface of the tongue is the bottom surface
- The lateral border of the tongue is the side
Oral perspective quadrants
- Midline divides the mouth into left and right halves
- Each half is divided into anterior and posterior quadrants, based on the teeth
