Location and Structure
- Located in the thoracic cavity, between the lungs
- Protected by the rib cage
- Conical shape, with the apex pointing downwards and the base attached to the great vessels
- Divided into four chambers: left and right atria, and left and right ventricles
Heart Wall Layers
- Epicardium: outermost layer, thin layer of connective tissue
- Myocardium: middle layer, thick layer of cardiac muscle
- Endocardium: innermost layer, thin layer of epithelial tissue

Right Atrium (RA)
- Receives deoxygenated blood from the body through the superior and inferior vena cavae
- Walls are thin and relatively weak

- Pumps blood from the RA to the lungs through the pulmonary artery
- Walls are thicker and stronger than the RA

Left Atrium (LA)
- Receives oxygenated blood from the lungs through the pulmonary veins
- Walls are thin and relatively weak

- Pumps blood from the LA to the rest of the body through the aorta
- Walls are thicker and stronger than the LA
