Amrut Mission 2.0: Driving Urban Renewal and Smart Cities

Introduction

Launched on 01st October, 2021, the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0 aims to provide universal coverage of water supply through functional taps to all households in all statutory towns in the country, as well as coverage of sewerage/septage management in 500 cities. Additionally, AMRUT 2.0 promotes circular economy of water through development of City Water Balance Plans (CWBP) for each city, focusing on recycling and reusing treated sewage, rejuvenating water bodies, and conserving water.

Urban Rejuvenation

AMRUT 2.0 focuses on improving the basic infrastructure in cities and towns by addressing issues in the sectors of water supply, sewerage and septage management, storm water drainage, green spaces and parks, and non-motorized urban transport. By enhancing these essential services, the mission aims to improve the living conditions for residents, particularly the poor and disadvantaged communities.

Funding for urban development under AMRUT 2.0 totals ₹2,99,000 crore, with the central government providing a share of ₹76,760 crore over the course of five years. Of this, ₹22,000 crore is reserved for ongoing projects of AMRUT till March 2023.

Smart Cities

While AMRUT focuses on the provision of basic services in urban areas, the concept of smart cities is aimed at promoting sustainable urban development and ensuring a high standard of living for its inhabitants. However, the implementation of smart cities faces several challenges, such as budgetary constraints, coordination among multiple agencies, and the need for skilled personnel in smaller cities.

To address these challenges, AMRUT 2.0 emphasizes the importance of partnerships between central and state governments, as well as cooperation between various stakeholders in the urban environment. This approach aims to foster innovation and collaboration, thereby driving urban transformation and economic growth.

In conclusion, the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0 plays a crucial role in revitalizing urban centers in India, both through the provision of basic services and the promotion of smart technologies. By investing in infrastructure and fostering partnerships, AMRUT 2.0 strives to create livable, sustainable cities for the future.
