Route, Onset, Peak, and Duration
- Administered intramuscularly (IM) with a rapid onset, peak effectiveness at 1 hour, and duration of 6-8 hours.
- Intravenous (IV) administration leads to immediate onset, peak at the end of infusion, and duration of 6-8 hours.
Dosage
- For adults and children over 40 kg: IM & IV dosage ranges from 1-2 g of ampicillin every 6-8 hours, with a maximum of 12 g per day.
- Children over 1 year: 100-200 mg ampicillin/kg/day divided every 6 hours; for meningitis, the dosage is increased to 200-400 mg/kg/day divided every 6 hours, max 8 g/day.
- Infants over 1 month: 100-150 mg ampicillin/kg/day divided every 6 hours.
