Amino Acid Classification
- Amino acids are categorized based on the polarity of their side chains (R groups) at a physiological pH of ~7.4.
Non-Polar Amino Acids
- These amino acids have non-polar side chains.
- Examples include: Glycine, alanine, valine, leucine, isoleucine, methionine, proline, phenylalanine, and tryptophan.
Polar Amino Acids (Uncharged)
- These amino acids have polar but uncharged side chains.
- Sulfhydryl side chains: Cysteine
- Hydroxyl side chains: Serine, threonine, and tyrosine
- Amide containing side chains: Asparagine and glutamine
Polar Amino Acids (Charged)
- These amino acids have charged side chains.
- Negatively charged radicals: Aspartic acid and glutamic acid (acidic amino acids). These amino acids have a mono-amino and di-carboxylic structure.
- Positively charged radicals: Lysine, arginine, and histidine (basic amino acids). These amino acids have a di-amino and mono-carboxylic structure.
