AME License and CARs

  • An AME (Aircraft Maintenance Engineer) license has various ratings, including M1, M2, S, E, and B.
  • M1 rating is for aircraft with a weight less than 12,566 lbs, and are either turbo-prop or turbo-shaft aircraft.
  • M2 rating is for aircraft heavier than 12,566 lbs, with thrust-producing engines, which can also be propeller-driven.

Other Categories

  • S rating is for structures.
  • E rating is for avionics.
  • B rating is for balloons.

Definitions

  • Airworthy: an aircraft that is fit and safe for flight, conforming to its type design.
  • DAR: Design Approval Representative.
  • CARs: Canadian Aviation Regulations.
  • CARAC: Canadian Aviation Regulatory Advisory Council.
  • ICAO: International Civil Aviation Organization.
  • AMO: Approved Maintenance Organization.
  • ATO: Approved Training Organization.
  • MPM: Maintenance Policy Manual.

Age Requirement and AAIR

  • Minimum age requirement for an AME license is 21 years.
  • AAIR: Annual Airworthiness Information Report.

Data Plate

  • Data plates are typically found on the entrance door, rearmost entrance door, or external surface of the tail of the aircraft, visible from the ground.
  • Data plates must be permanently attached to the aircraft.
  • Information on a data plate includes model number, serial number, manufacturer, and type certificate.
  • Data plates can be removed for maintenance, but must be reattached afterwards.
  • It is not allowed to remove data plates without the minister's permission, except for maintenance.

SDR and MEL

  • SDR: Service Difficulty Report, which must be submitted within 3 days of discovery, or an interim report within 3 days, and a final report within 14 days.
  • MEL: Minimum Equipment List, which allows an aircraft to fly with certain inoperative items, while still meeting legal requirements.

Nationality Mark and C of R

  • Canadian nationality mark for aircraft is C- followed by a hyphen, a G, and three more letters.
  • Before 1984, the nationality mark was CF.
  • C of R stands for Certificate of Registration, which must be kept on board the aircraft.

C of A

  • C of A stands for Certificate of Airworthiness.
  • A C of A does not expire, but can be invalidated if maintenance is pending, and becomes valid again once the maintenance is complete.
  • A C of A can be expired if the TC suspends it or the owner surrenders it.

Registration Categories

  • Aircraft can be registered in state, private, or commercial categories.

Offenses under CARs

  • There are two types of offenses: provision creating offense and administrative offense.
  • Administrative offense is committed by the Minister of Transport Canada or a delegate.
  • Provision offense is committed by individuals, such as AME or pilots.
