Alcohol and Drug Use

Overview

Alcohol and drug use among young people is a significant concern due to the negative impact it can have on their general health, physical growth, emotional and social development, and decision-making abilities. The use of substances like alcohol, cannabis, opioids, stimulants, hallucinogens, and inhalants is prevalent among young people, with many trying these substances only a few times and stopping, while others may continue to use them more regularly.

Types of Substances Used

Alcohol

Alcohol is the most commonly used substance among young people, and its abuse can lead to physical dependency, dementia, sexual impotence, cirrhosis of the liver, and heart disease. It is particularly harmful to young people whose brains are still developing.

Cannabis (Marijuana)

Cannabis use can affect young people's ability to think, learn, reason, remember, and solve problems, and it can cause mood swings, anxiety, and depression.

Opioids (Heroin and Prescription Drugs)

Opioid use can lead to substance use disorders, and it is often associated with other substances such as alcohol and cocaine.

Sedatives/Tranquilizers

The use of sedatives and tranquilizers can cause substance use disorders, especially in young people.

Stimulants Including Methamphetamine

Stimulant use can lead to substance use disorders and various health problems.

Hallucinogens

Hallucinogen use can cause substance use disorders and has been associated with mental health issues.

Cocaine

Cocaine use can cause abnormal heartbeats, leading to heart attacks, seizures, or strokes, and it can increase the risk of car crashes and violent behavior.

Inhalants

Inhalant use can cause severe health problems, including brain damage, respiratory problems, and death.

Health and Behavioral Risks

The use of alcohol and other drugs can lead to several negative consequences, such as blackouts, poisoning, overdose, and death; physical and psychological dependence; damage to vital organs like the brain, heart, and liver; inability to learn and remember information; and psychological problems including depression, psychosis, and severe anxiety.

Impaired judgment and coordination resulting from the use of alcohol and other drugs are associated with acquaintance assault, DUI/DWI arrests, hazing, falls, drowning, and other injuries; contracting sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS; and unwanted or unplanned sexual experiences and pregnancy.

Factors Influencing Substance Use

Rebellion

Young people may use substances to rebel against their parents or to fit in with their friends.

Curiosity

They may want to know what it feels like to get high.

Social Influences

Peer pressure and social norms can also contribute to substance use among young people.

Education

Educating young people about the risks and consequences of substance use can help prevent or reduce its prevalence.

Parental Involvement

Parents can play a key role in teaching their children about the dangers of alcohol and drug use by talking honestly and openly about the subject.

Treatment

For individuals with substance use disorders, treatment programs can help address the underlying issues and promote recovery.
