Aircraft
- Any weight-carrying device designed to be supported by air.
Varieties of Aircraft
-
Airplane: Engine-driven, fixed-wing aircraft heavier than air.
- Class: Single-engine land, multi-engine land, single-engine sea, multi-engine sea.
- Example: Cessna 152
- Rotorcraft: Helicopters and gyroplanes.
- Glider: Soaring aircraft without an engine.
- Lighter-than-air: Airships and hot air balloons.
- Powered Lift: Also called “tilt-rotor” aircraft.
Categories of Aircraft by Intended Use
- Normal: Common to most small airplanes, including trainer aircraft.
- Utility: Similar to normal but can withstand heavier stress.
- Acrobatic: Fewest operation limitations.
- Commuter: Carry passengers but limited to 19 seats and 19,000 lbs or less.
- Transport: Used by airlines.
- Restricted: Special purpose aircraft (e.g., spray planes, water bombers).
- Limited: Military aircraft allowed for limited use in civilian aviation.
- Provisional: Newly designed aircraft not yet fully certified.
- Experimental: Amateur home-built or racing aircraft, research and development aircraft testing new design concepts.
Major Airplane Components
-
Fuselage: Houses the cabin and/or cockpit, seats, controls, cargo, and attachment points for other components.
-
Construction Types:
- Truss: Visible struts and wire-braced wings.
