Aircraft Definitions and Types

  • Aircraft is any weight-carrying device supported by air.
  • Airplane is an engine-driven, fixed-wing aircraft, heavier than air, supported by aerodynamic lift.
    • Classes:
      • Single engine land
      • Multi-engine Land
      • Single engine sea
      • Multi-engine sea
  • Rotorcraft includes helicopters and gyroplanes
  • Other aircraft types include gliders, lighter-than-air craft (airships and hot air balloons) and powered lift aircraft.
  • Aircraft Categories for Certification:
    • Normal: Common to most small airplanes, including trainers.
    • Utility: Similar to normal, but built for heavier stress.
    • Acrobatic: Fewest operational limitations.
    • Commuter: Carry passengers, limited to 19 seats and 19,000 lbs or less.
    • Transport: For airlines.
    • Restricted: For special purposes (spray planes, water bombers).
    • Limited: Military aircraft authorized for limited use in civilian aviation.
    • Provisional: Newly designed aircraft that have not met all certification requirements.
    • Experimental: Amateur-built, racing, research & development, or new design testing aircraft.

Major Airplane Components

  • Fuselage: Houses the cabin/cockpit, seats, controls, cargo space, and attachment points for other major components.
    • Construction Types:
      • Truss: Visible struts and wire-braced wings.
      • Monocoque: Skin supports most imposed loads.
