To manually select an aircraft's status message when no warning is displayed
What is the primary function of the RCL (Recall) switch on the EICAS control panel?
To recall previously cleared warning messages if the failure conditions still exist
What happens when the CLR (Clear) switch is pressed on the EICAS control panel?
It suppresses status messages
How many main components make up the basic EICAS system?
4
What are the three types of information the EICAS system provides the flight crew?
Primary engine parameters, secondary engine parameters, and advisory/caution/warning alert messages
Study Notes
Display Units
- Two display units provide a wide variety of information relevant to engine operation and other automated systems
- Upper unit displays primary engine parameters:
- N1 speed
- EGT
- Warning and caution messages
- Lower unit displays secondary parameters:
- N2 speed
- Fuel flow
- Oil quantity
- Pressure
- Temperature
- Status of non-engine systems can also be displayed, including:
- Flight control surface position
- Hydraulic system
- APU
Display Modes
- EICAS has three modes of displaying information:
- Operational mode (selected by flight crew)
- Status mode (selected by flight crew)
- Maintenance mode (ground use only, selected via maintenance panel)
Operational Mode
- Displays engine operating information and alerts required to be actioned by the crew in flight
- Normally only the upper display unit presents information
Advisory Mode
- Provides a summary of the aircraft's condition following a failure and possible downgrading of systems
Failure Mode
- Classifies failures into three levels:
- Level 3: Warning (emergency configuration, requires immediate corrective action)
- Level 2: Caution (abnormal configuration, requires crew awareness)
- Level 1: Advisory (information on aircraft configuration requiring monitoring)
Event Record Switch
- Normally auto-records any malfunctions as they occur
- Manual switch enables manual event marking for storage in non-volatile memory
- Data can be retrieved and displayed by ground engineers via ground maintenance panel
Computer Select Switch
- In "AUTO" position, selects primary computer and automatically switches to secondary computer in case of failure
- Manual selection of either computer is possible
Display Brightness
- Controlled by inner knob for display intensity and outer knob for display brightness
Thrust Reference Set Switch
- Allows selection of reference cursor on thrust indicator display (EPR or N1) for engines
Alert Messages
- System continually monitors over 400 inputs from engine and airframe systems
- Up to 11 alert messages can be displayed on the upper display unit
- Three levels of alert messages:
- LEVEL A: Warning (red, immediate corrective action required)
- LEVEL B: Caution (amber, immediate crew awareness required)
- LEVEL C: Advisory (amber, crew awareness required)
Maintenance Control Panel
- Used by maintenance engineers to display maintenance data stored in system's computer memories
- STS switch permits manual selection of status message if no warning is displayed
- RCL switch enables recall of previously cleared warning messages
Engine Indicating & Crew Alerting System
- Basic system comprises two display units, a control panel, and two computers
- Computers are designated "Left" and "Right" and only one is in control of the system at any one time
- System provides flight crew with information on primary engine parameters, secondary engine parameters, and advisory/caution/warning alert messages as required
