Study Notes
Event Record Switch
- Normally, an auto event function records malfunctions automatically
- The push switch enables manual event marking for storing suspect malfunctions in non-volatile memory
- Retrieved data can be displayed by ground engineers using the ground maintenance panel
- Manual switch can also be used to record fault data in the air or on the ground for Environmental Control, Electrical Power, Hydraulic, and APU systems
Computer Select Switch
- In the "AUTO" position, it selects the primary computer and switches to the other in case of failure
- Other positions allow manual selection of either the right or left computers
Display Brightness
- Controlled by inner knob for display intensity and outer knob for display brightness
Thrust Reference Set Switch
- Pulling and rotating the inner knob positions the reference cursor on the thrust indicator display (EPR or N1) for selected engines
- Engine selection is done by the outer knob
Max Indicator Reset
- Alerts are displayed on display units if measured parameters exceed normal operating limits
- The reset button clears alerts from the display when excess limits no longer exist
STATUS MODE
- Displays data to determine dispatch readiness of an aircraft
- Closely associated with the aircraft's Minimum Equipment List
- Displays positions of flight control surfaces, selected sub-system parameters, and equipment status messages on the lower display unit
- Normally selected on the ground for pre-flight checks or prior to shutdown to aid in making entries in the aircraft's Technical log
MAINTENANCE MODE
- Provides maintenance engineers with information in five different display formats to aid in fault finding and verification testing of major sub-systems
DISPLAY SELECT PANEL
- Controls the operation of EICAS
- Located on the centre pedestal
EICAS Control Panel
- Engine Display Switch: a push-type switch for removing or presenting secondary information on the lower display
- Status Display Switch: a push-type switch for removing or presenting the status page on the lower display
DISPLAY UNITS
- Provide a wide variety of information relevant to engine operation and automated systems
- Upper unit displays primary engine parameters, warning and caution messages
- Lower unit displays secondary parameters, non-engine system status, and other information
DISPLAY MODES
- EICAS categorizes displays and alerts according to function and usage
- Three modes of displaying information: Operational, Status, and Maintenance
OPERATIONAL MODE
- Displays engine operating information and alerts required to be actioned by the crew in flight
- Normally, only the upper display unit presents information
ECAM (Electronic Centralized Aircraft Monitoring)
- Differs from EICAS in that displayed data relates to primary systems of the aircraft
- Data displayed in checklist and pictorial or synoptic format
ECAM DISPLAY UNITS
- Can be mounted either side-by-side or top/bottom
- Left-hand/top unit displays system status, warnings, and corrective action in a sequenced checklist format
- Right-hand/bottom unit displays associated information in pictorial or synoptic format
ECAM DISPLAY MODES
- Four display modes: three automatically selected (phase-related, advisory, and failure-related) and one manual mode
- Manual mode permits selection of diagrams related to 12 aircraft systems for routine checking and selection of status messages
Flight Phase Related Mode
- Automatically selected based on current phase of aircraft operation
- Displays appropriate to the current phase of aircraft operation (pre-flight, take-off, climb, cruise, descent, approach, and post landing)
STS Switch
- Permits manual selection of an aircraft's status message if no warning is displayed
- Illuminates white when pressed and also illuminates the CLR switch
RCL Switch
- Enables previously cleared warning messages to be recalled if failure conditions still exist
- Pressing this switch also illuminates the CLR switch
- If failure no longer exists, "NO WARNING PRESENT" is displayed on the left-hand display unit
Learn about the differences between ECAM and EICAS, the primary systems displayed in checklist and pictorial formats, and the configuration of display units. Explore the dedicated left-hand/top unit which provides information on system status, warnings, and corrective actions.
