- Farmers should always take extra measures to ensure their safety while working in the farm
Hazards and Risks in the Farm
- Farmers exposed to high risk of accidents or injuries
- Risks are the possibility of hazard to exist
- Risks can cause injury or health problems
- Workers must be properly trained and guided by management
Types of Hazards
- Hazard potentially harms or injures workers in any workplace
- Over fatigue and improper posture while harvesting crops
- Using unguarded machinery is a common hazard
Physical Hazards
- Weak platforms, slippery stairs, or floorings
- Falling objects, excessively loud music
- Prolonged vibration, poor ventilation
- Extreme temperatures, and poor air quality

- Typical hazardous chemicals
- Can cause fire or explosion
- Examples: pesticides, cleaning agents, acids, and poisons
- Exposure to certain chemicals or improper handling
Biological Hazards
- Includes bacteria, viruses, mold, mildew, insects, and vermin
- Biological hazards are organic substances
- These pose a threat to the health of people and other living organisms
Psychosocial Hazards
- Stresses from work, family, or even among friends
- Psychological risks in production
- Negative affective states such as anxiety, depression, guilt, shock, and loss of self-esteem
Ergonomic Hazards
- Physical conditions at the workplace
- Caused by incorrect body movements
- Leading to injuries or health concerns
Chemicals and Hazardous Tools and Equipment Used for Farm Work
Spraying Chemicals
- Fertilizers and pesticides are common in farming
- Used to control pests, weeds, and mollusks
- Farm owners consult local agriculturists for appropriate chemicals
Important considerations when using chemicals for the crops
- Avoid spraying during strong winds directed toward water bodies or houses
- Never wash spray equipment into open drains or towards dams
- Avoid using used chemical containers
Reducing the risk of hazardous chemicals
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Store chemicals in locked cabinets or storage areas
- Know first aid procedures
- List of hazardous chemicals used on farm
Land Preparation using Heavy Equipment and Implements
- Use of mechanical equipment like tractors
- Risks of running over a person
Safe practices when using heavy farm implements
- Do not use tractors for transportation
- Seat belts must be used when driving tractors
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential to prevent serious injuries
Farm Respiratory Protection
- Farmers use respirators to protect themselves from inhaling mold spores and chemicals
- Respirators must be properly selected, worn, and maintained
Eye Protection
- Eye protection is used to protect farmers' eyes from possible flying objects, liquid sprays, or other elements
- Types: goggles and glasses with safety shields
Foot Protection
- Wearing appropriate footwear protects the farmer from sharp objects, animal bites, and slipping
Hand Protection
- Farmers use gloves to protect their hands from hazardous elements in infested crops
- Disposable gloves when dealing with infested crops are advisable
Head Protection
- Since farmers are exposed to sun heat, it is important to wear a hat
- Prevents head injury from slip or fall
Body Protection
- Many forms of body protection
- Long-sleeve clothes, long pants, etc
Basic First-Aid During Emergency Situations and Accidents in the Farm
Shock
- Do not give the victim anything to eat or drink
- Lay the victim on his/her back
- Make sure the victim gets adequate air
- Keep the victim warm
- Raise the victim's feet and legs with a pillow
- Roll the victim on his/her side if they vomit
Bleeding and Wounds
- Place a clean cloth or gauze over the wound
- Apply firm, steady pressure for at least five minutes
- Elevate the injured arm or leg if possible
Chemical/Compressed Gas Burns
- Use a drench hose, emergency shower, or eyewash for at least 15 minutes to rinse away all traces of chemicals
- Remove contaminated clothing from the victim
- Cover the burn loosely with a clean, dry cloth or special burn dressing
- Check the victim for shock
Fainting
- Ordinarily, fainting victims regain consciousness after
- If not, immediately bring the victim to the ER
- Lay the victim down on their back and permit plenty of fresh /cool air to flow
- Apply cold compress on forehead
- Keep windpipe clear if victim vomits
Heat Stroke
- Heat stroke is life-threatening
- It must not be disregarded
- Symptoms include flushed, hot, and dry skin; rapid pulse; minimal perspiration; unconsciousness
- Bring the victim to a cooler place and lie him/her down on their back with feet up
- Loosen clothing, remove footwear
- Apply cold compresses or wet towels to cool the victim
- Treat the victim for shock or bring to hospital immediately
