    Study Notes

    Agriculture

    • Rice: Staple food crop in India, second-largest producer after China. Prefers high temperatures (above 25°C), high humidity, and annual rainfall over 100cm. Grown in northern and northeastern India, coastal areas and deltas, using irrigation in areas with lower rainfall. Key producing states include Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh.

    • Wheat: A major cereal crop in northern and northwestern India, grown in rabi season (cool growing season). Requires 50-75 cm of annual rainfall and bright sunshine. Important wheat-producing states are Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Bihar, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

    • Millets: Important crops in India including jowar, bajra, and ragi. Valuable for their nutritional content (iron, calcium, etc). Ragi is particularly high in micronutrients and roughage. Often grown on dry or black soils in states like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Jowar is a rain-fed crop, growing well in moist areas. Bajra is adapted to sandy and black soils.

    • Maize: Used as both food and fodder. A kharif crop, thriving in alluvial soils with temperatures between 21°C and 27°C. Modern farming practices (improved seeds, fertilizers, irrigation) have increased maize production in states like Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Madhya Pradesh.

    • Pulses: Major protein source for vegetarians in India. Includes tur, urad, moong, masur, peas and gram. Pulses help enrich soil fertility, often grown in rotation with other crops. Important producing states include Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Karnataka.

    • Oilseeds: Groundnut is a major oilseed in India. India is either a top producer or amongst the world leaders in groundnut, rape and mustard production. Other major oilseeds also cultivated include mustard, coconut, sesame, soybean, castor seeds, cotton seeds, linseed and sunflower. States like Gujarat, are major producers of groundnut.

    • Sugarcane: A tropical/subtropical crop grown in hot and humid climates (21-27°C temp) and areas with 75-100cm annual rainfall. Second largest producer after Brazil; significant production regions include Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar, Punjab and Haryana.

    • Tea: Important beverage crop in India, cultivated primarily in tropical/subtropical regions needing deep, fertile well-drained soils and frequent rainfall. Tea production states include Assam, Darjeeling, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Meghalaya, and to a lesser extent in Andhra Pradesh and Tripura.

    • Rubber: A tropical crop grown in moist and humid climates, ideally with over 200cm rainfall and temperatures above 25°C. Key production areas include Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

    • Cotton: India is a significant cotton producer, with production states including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. Grown in drier parts of black soil in the Deccan plateau.

    • Fiber crops: Four important fiber crops are cotton, jute, hemp and natural silk. Cotton's production is significant in several states. Jute is another key fiber crop and its cultivation is largely restricted to a few Indian states.

    • Horticulture Crops: India is a major producer of fruits and vegetables encompassing temperate and tropical varieties. Notable producing areas include Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and states in southern and northern India.
