Study Notes
Aggregates
- Aggregates are coarse-to-medium-grained materials used in construction (sand, gravel, crushed stone).
- Aggregates form the bulk of concrete.
- Fine aggregates are small (0-4mm) and used for mortar
- Coarse aggregates are larger (5-20mm) and used for general concrete.
Aggregate Requirements
- Aggregates must be clean.
- Free from sediments.
- Sound (not broken).
- Strong (not easily crushed).
- Well-graded (consistent sizes).
- Well-shaped (proper form).
Types of Aggregates
Coarse Aggregates
- Gravel: Small, somewhat rounded stone pieces. Hard and textured surfaces make it good coarse aggregate. (e.g., riverbeds).
- Crushed stones (e.g., trap rock): Hardest and most durable. Dark, heavy, close-grained. Good for concrete. Granite is a less expensive alternative to trap rock. Crushed stone sizes are 6mm-20mm.
Fine Aggregates
- Sand, crushed stones, or gravel screenings.
- Sand is the most important fine aggregate.
- Sand is a finely divided rock material that passes through a 5mm sieve.
- Sand is not subject to breakdown, decay, or expansion.
