Discovering Marathi: The Language's Evolution in Modern Contexts

Marathi is a vibrant language steeped in history, culture, and technological innovation. Spoken primarily across western India—particularly in the state of Maharashtra—it ranks among India's top five most widely-used languages. Marathi maintains a strong presence both in daily communication and in cutting-edge research fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), natural language processing (NLP), and machine learning.

Marathi Text Input Efficiency and Challenges

Researchers have studied the efficacy of various Marathi text input methods on mobile devices. A notable example involved evaluating four different keyboard paradigms among 153 participants over 3–4 weeks. The findings revealed that keyboards featuring logical layouts outperformed those designed with partial frequency-based layouts. Moreover, they discovered that included word prediction features negatively affected input speed in comparison with simpler alternatives.

Advances in NLP, Machine Translation, and Summarization

The MARGEN project aimed to develop advanced Marathi language technologies employing neural machine interpretation (NMI) and summarization techniques. By leveraging the IndicBART model, a multilingual sequence-to-sequence pre-trained model created specifically for Indian languages like Marathi, researchers successfully demonstrated improved NLI capabilities and summary generation for Marathi questions and responses.

Overcoming Barriers Through Cross-Linguistic Research

Another prominent example includes the cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire (MSSQ) short form into Marathi, an endeavor motivated by the need to bridge language barriers and enhance accessibility for the local community, particularly pediatric populations. Following World Health Organization guidelines, researchers conducted forward translations, expert panel back-translations, pre-tests, cognitive interviews, and finally confirmed the Marathi MSSQ-SF's validity and reliability.

These examples showcase how Marathi, traditionally rooted in literature and poetry, continues its evolution as a dynamic force in contemporary society.
