ABO Blood Grouping
- The basis for blood grouping is the antigen-antibody reaction.
- A specific antigen reacts only with its corresponding antibody, resulting in agglutination (clumping of red blood cells).
- ABO blood grouping is based on the presence or absence of antigens A and B on red blood cells.
- Blood Type A: Contains antigen A
- Blood Type B: Contains antigen B
- Blood Type AB: Contains both antigens A and B
- Blood Type O: Contains neither antigen A nor antigen B
- Antibodies in the ABO system are present in the serum from birth.
- Blood Type A: Contains anti-B antibodies
- Blood Type B: Contains anti-A antibodies
- Blood Type AB: Contains no antibodies
- Blood Type O: Contains both anti-A and anti-B antibodies.
- The presence or absence of agglutination reactions, when tested with anti-A and anti-B sera, determines the blood group.
- If agglutination occurs with anti-A serum, the blood group is A.
- If agglutination occurs with anti-B serum, the blood group is B.
- If agglutination occurs with both anti-A and anti-B serum, the blood group is AB.
- If no agglutination occurs with either anti-A or anti-B serum, the blood group is O.
