Study Notes
Omaha Police Department Organizational Structure
- The Omaha Police Department (OPD) is organized into seven main components
- The components are the Office of the Chief of Police, Criminal Investigations Bureau, Executive Services Bureau, Police Services Bureau, Professional Oversight Bureau, Technical and Reporting Services Bureau, and Uniform Patrol Bureau.
- Each component has sub-components within it
- Precincts and Sections are equal components in the OPD structure, commanded by a captain or manager
- Units and Squads are sub-components of Precincts or Sections; they may report to higher levels of command in the organizational structure
- Units are commanded by lieutenants, managers or supervisors
- Squads are commanded by sergeants, managers or supervisors
- Bureaus and their sub-components can be augmented by As-Needed Components (ANCs)
- Members of ANCs are not permanently assigned
- ANCs fall under the control chain of command for the unit they are assigned to when active and conducting training
- ANCs employees report to their assigned position in the OPD when not active or not training
- Each Bureau is commanded by a Deputy Police Chief or Deputy Director
- The OPD organizational structure shows the chain of command and lines of authority and communication within the Department.
- The OPD policy is to assign personnel to organizational components based on the number and type of position authorized in the budget and workload assessments.
