History of Grünwald

• The Bronze Age (2000-1000 BC) and the Urnenfeld era (1000 BC-500 AD) are both represented in Grünwald by pottery, urns, and bronze objects.
• During the Roman period (27 BC-476 AD) and the Middle Ages (476-1806 AD), Grünwald was settled by Germans, Celts, and Romans.
• The land and estates of the time belonged to the great and the small, the monasteries and foundations of Dießen, Schäftlarn, and Tegernsee.
• Later, a peasant settlement of the Derbolfinger was established in Grünwald.
• The name change from Derbolfing to Grünwald happened when the Burg Grünwald was built in the 13th century, which was owned by Ludwig the Strenge, a son of the first wife of Mechtild, a daughter of Rudolf of Habsburg.
• Ludwig the Strenge also visited the Burg often. When the Herzog Albrecht IV. married the daughter of the Duke of Bavaria, the Burg became part of the ducal estate.
