Study Notes

Types of Leukocytes

  • Neutrophils are the most abundant white blood cells (WBC) and are phagocytic; they self-destruct after combating foreign invaders, leading to a short lifespan of a few days.
  • Monocytes are agranular leukocytes capable of migrating into tissues, where they can transform into macrophages for enhanced immune response.
  • Lymphocytes comprise B lymphocytes that originate in the bone marrow and produce antibodies to combat bacterial infections, while T lymphocytes arise in the thymus and combat cancer cells, viruses, and other foreign substances.
  • The five main types of leukocytes include neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils.
  • Basophils are circulating leukocytes with a bilobed nucleus that produce histamine, playing a role in inflammatory responses.
  • Eosinophils increase in number during allergic reactions and are active against parasitic infections; they also possess a bilobed nucleus.
