Plant Cell Structure

Plant Cell Wall

• Primary cell wall: thin, flexible, and composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, and pectin
• Secondary cell wall: thick, rigid, and composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin
• Suberin: a waxy substance that helps to prevent water loss
• Lignin: a complex organic compound that provides strength and rigidity

Plant Tissue

• Meristematic tissue: undifferentiated cells that can divide to produce new tissues
• Apical meristem: responsible for primary growth
• Intercalary meristem: responsible for secondary growth
• Primary growth: increase in length of the plant
• Secondary growth: increase in thickness of the plant

Simple Permanent Tissue

• Parenchymal cell: thin-walled, flexible, and can store food, water, and waste products
• Collenchyma cell: thick-walled, flexible, and provides support
• Sclerenchyma cell: thick-walled, rigid, and provides support
• Cell wall composition: cellulose, hemicellulose, pectin, suberin, and lignin

Storage Parenchyma

• Stores food, water, and waste products
• Found in roots, tubers, and seeds

Chlorenchyma

• Contains chloroplasts and can perform photosynthesis
