LEARNING OBJECTIVES 1. examine the brief history, core teachings, fundamental beliefs, practices, and related issues of Judaism to determine its significance to its followers and 2. justify the core teaching of Judaism is the covenant of one God with a chosen people vs. other people with many gods by rationalizing its teachings. WHAT IS JUDAISM? Judaism is a monotheistic religion, with the Torah as its foundation text (part of the larger text known as the Tanakh or Hebrew Bible). Judaism is considered by religious Jews to be the expression of the covenantal relationship with God. JEWISH SACRED TEXTS Tanakh - Torah - Nevi’im – Ketubi’im Torah - (Pentateuch) the five books Talmud – books of commentaries TEACHINGS OF JUDAISM God created the universe. God’s Creation is good. Human beings are created in the image of God. Humanity should view their place in Creation with love and awe. The Sabbath and prayer help us to achieve this state of mind. The Torah prohibits the wasteful consumption of anything. The Torah gives an obligation to save human life. The Torah prohibits the extinction of species and causing undo pain to non- human creatures. Environmental Justice is a Jewish value. Tikkun Olam: The perfection/fixing of the world is in our hands. SYMBOL FOR JUDAISM The Star of David a symbol commonly associated with Judaism and the Jewish People. In Hebrew, it is called Magen David (“Shield of David”). A six-pointed star, the Star of David is composed of two overlaid equilateral triangles, one pointing up and the other pointing down TWO TRIANGLES IN THE STAR OF DAVID T h e Z o h a r s t a t e s , “ T h e re a re t h re e k n o t s connecting [three entities] one to another: the Holy One, blessed be He; Torah; and Israel.” The Jewish soul connects to its Creator through the study and observance of Torah. The triangle represents the connection between these three entities THE SEVEN FIELDS OF THE STAR OF DAVID They are: chesed (kindness), gevurah (severity), tiferet (harmony), netzach (perseverance), hod (splendor), yesod (f o u n d a t i o n ) a n d m a l c h u t (royalty).
