SCIENCE 6 Let us say you are a tourist who wants to visit the Philippines, what are the different things you want to know about the Philippines before you travel? The Weather Learning Objectives: a.) demonstrate an understanding on how weather changes from time to time; b.) distinguish the factors that affect weather; and c.) identify the dangers of severe weather. WEATHER - Condition in the atmosphere in a particular place at a particular time. - It affects our day-to-day activities. THE HIJAS MARK: A BROTHER/SISTER TO OTHERS Pray more, worry less. - Matthew 6:34 GRADE TWO SCIENCE SECOND GRADING PERIOD NAME: ________________________ SECTION: __________DATE: _________ WEATHER FORECAST - a statement of expected weather conditions in a given region over a period of one hour to a few days in advance Meteorologists A weather forecast is based on the analysis of the different weather elements gathered through the various weather instruments. WEATHER ELEMENTS AND INSTRUMENTS TEMPERATURE o is the measure of the degree of hotness or coldness of the air o The temperature on Earth averages 15°C at sea level. HUMIDITY o is a measure of moisture present in the air o When the atmosphere's temperature is high, the water on the Earth’s surface evaporates rapidly, so the amount of water vapor in the air is high. HUMIDITY Hygrometer is the instrument used to measure relative humidity. AIR PRESSURE o is the force of the air on a given surface divided by the area of that surface o large regions in the atmosphere that have higher pressure than the surroundings are called a high-pressure areas. AIR PRESSURE o Regions with lower pressure than the surroundings are called low-pressure areas. o Most storms occur in low-pressure areas like in the ocean during summer. o Barometer is used to measure air pressure. WIND o is the horizontal movement of air o Wind speed has an average range from 8 to 24 km/h near Earth’s surface and can be higher during intense storms. WIND Anemometer is used to measure wind velocity and a wind vane is to determine the direction of the CLOUDS o are tiny droplets of water suspended in the air o formed as warm air rises and cools PRECIPITATION Water that falls to the earth in solid or liquid form like rain, snow, sleet, or hail. RAIN GAUGE A rain gauge is an instrument used by meteorologists and hydrologists to gather and measure the amount of liquid precipitation over an area in a predefined area, over a period of time. Seasons and Weather Patterns in the Philippines Seasons in the Philippines The Philippines’ climate is warm and humid all year round, and is considered to be one of the world’s healthiest tropical climate. Philippines has two pronounced seasons: WET SEASON Characterized by the rainy season with thunderstorms. It starts in June and peaks in July and September. WET SEASON Air is hot and humid which brings heavy rains and typhoons. Precipitation is highest in the area where the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) strikes. DRY SEASON Characterized by hot and cloudless days. Between January and May, the climate is generally dry with occasional rain showers. DRY SEASON The peak dry season is in April. The dry season is influenced by the seasonal Northeast Monsoon (Amihan). Factors Affecting the Seasons of the Philippines Location of the Philippines The Philippines is located little north of the equator which receives vertical rays of sunlight. Sun’s heat causes much water to evaporate and fall as rain later. Prevailing Winds The prevailing wind is a wind that blows mostly from a single direction. The prevailing winds in the Philippines are the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) and Northeast Monsoon (Amihan). Factors Affecting Weather Pattern in the Philippines AIR MASSES Air Masses are a large bodies of air that have characteristics similar to the region of Earth’s surface where these develop. Air Masses that pass over the Philippines affect its weather. From April to early October, the air mass formed over warm Equatorial Oceans brings hot and humid air. This warm air mass brings heavy rains and typhoons. From November to February, cool and dry air mass forms over Siberia and Northern China. This cold air mass brings a cold and dry season. Unusual Weather Pattern two unusual weather patterns that happen during the year are called El Niño and La Niña Unusual Weather Pattern -El Niño happens when a change in the weather pattern makes the weather warmer than normal. -La Niña happens when a change in weather pattern makes weather colder than normal. Formative Activity Questions: 1. What is the importance of studying the weather pattern in your area? 2. How does global warming affect the weather changes in the Philippines? 3. What are the adverse effects of severe weather? Let us make meaning! We know that the Philippines is often visited by weather disturbances that sometimes cause great damage. How do you show compassion to those victims of natural calamities in our country? Let us generalize! Share a phrase that shows what you have learned from today’s discussion.
