# Tetracyclines and chloramphenicol ### Tetracycline Tetracycline is a broad spectrum antibiotic. It is an antimicrobial agent and is naturally occurring. #### Indications * Brucellosis * Travelers diarrhea * Syphilis * Methicillin resistant S. Aureus #### Investigations Investigations are ongoing for repurposing of drugs i.e finding out other disease conditions that can be treated with an already existing drug especially those that are easily available and are abused e.g Tetracycline. #### Mechanism of Action Tetracycline binds to the 30S ribosome and inhibits protein synthesis. It is mostly administered orally #### Pharmacokinetics Absorbed in the stomach is found in joints, ascitic fluid, pleural fluid. #### Side Effects * Nausea & Vomiting * Photosensitivity: can be caused by sun burns on exposure to the sun. Blocking shots are given before sun exposure to help. ### Chloramphenicol Highly associated with bone marrow toxicity. Can be found in Gille drops and certain eye drops. #### Indications Majority for eye infections. Continuous use of the eye drops can cause bone marrow suppression. #### Drug-Drug interaction * Avoid milk ingestion * Breastfeeding mothers can take it because Ca2+ in the milk will chelate the tetracycline. ### Tetracycline Tetracycline is teratogenic. Don’t give it to pregnant women. It stains the teeth of the children when they are born.
