Pathology of the gastrointestinal tract: The stomach part 2 Department of Anatomical Pathology Date: 02 August 2022 Outline Peptic ulcer disease Miscellaneous conditions Gastric neoplasia Benign Malignant Peptic Ulcer Disease Epidemiology : Lifetime risk for American men is 10% and 4% for American women Usually middle aged/older Peptic Ulcer Disease Major aetiological factors : Hyperacidity H. pylori gastritis Duodenal reflux NSAIDS Smoking Genetic factors Peptic Ulcer Disease Clinical features : Epigastric pain, burning, aching Worse at night or 1-3 hours after a meal Nausea Vomiting Belching Weight loss Peptic Ulcer Disease Ulcers can be : Acute Chronic Acute Gastric Ulceration Can occur in following settings : Part of acute gastritis Complication of a severe stress response e.g. severe burns (Curling ulcer), major trauma, CVA, raised intracranial pressure Extreme hyperacidity e.g. Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome (increased gastrin secretion) Acute Gastric Ulceration Pathology : Usually
