Name:_____________________________ Social Studies Review for Test The first Americans were Indigenous People who were successful stewards of the land. The earliest Americans came from Siberia in Eastern Asia. There are two theories about how the Native Americans came to North America from Siberia. The Bering Land Bridge Theory and the Coastal Route Theory are the two theories. Writing Question. Explain the Bering Land Bridge Theory. The Bering Land Bridge Theory states that the First Americans crossed over a land bridge that connected Siberia and Alaska. The land was exposed because it was at sea level and the water was not yet covering the land bridge. The first Americans would have traveled by walking from Siberia to North America. The Bering Land Bridge was 620 miles wide. Writing Question Explain the Coastal Route Theory. The Coastal Route Theory states that the earliest Americans traveled by small boats from Eastern Asia to Alaska and down the western coast of the Americas all the way to Chilli. The Coastal Route Theory is sometimes called the Kelp Highway Theory because kelp forests are found along the route. Do we know for sure how the First Americans arrived? No How the First Americans arrived is archaeologist’s greatest mystery. It is believed that 60 million Native Americans lived in the Americas before the Europeans arrived. 90% of the First Americans were killed off by diseases brought by the European explores over a 200 year period. A way of life for a group of people that includes behaviors, beliefs, and values is called culture. Culture is influenced by natural resources, climate, and geography. The study of the Earth’s surface is called Geography. A person who studies geography is called a Geographer. Earth’s physical features like mountains, lakes, rivers, and valleys are called landforms. Landforms can make communication between groups of people easier or harder. Places where it is easier to travel and trade have influence on each other’s culture. Landforms can effect peoples lifestyles. Give an example. People who live in mountains have to be stronger and in better shape to endure the altitude. People who live by the beach wear light clothes, and swim for activity. Natural Resources are materials from the Earth that are used to meet people's needs. Natural resource examples: plants, trees, water, coal, gold, gems, oil, wind. How do natural resources affect culture? The soil in a place affects whether people can grow food or crops. Historically, if the soil is not good people have to rely on hunting, fishing, gathering, and trading for food. The types of minerals can affect the types of tools a particular culture may have. Plants and animals can affect the type of buildings you can make. Depending on what is available people may make homes out of mud, brush, wood, ice, and animal skin. Climate is the type of weather you expect in a particular area over many years. Climate affects culture because it determines what kind of clothes people wear. Climate also affects farming. Writing Question. What is the culture iceberg? The culture iceberg helps explain what parts of culture are on the surface of a community and what parts of culture are below the surface. Describe your how your culture affects your life.
