SAP Master Data Governance (MDG) is a state-of-the-art master data management solution. It provides out-of-the-box, domain-specific master data governance to centrally create, change, and distribute, or consolidate master data across your complete enterprise system landscape In this context, MDG can either run as a separate master data hub or be co-deployed on an operational system. In both cases MDG can run on: - ERP on HANA or any other DB - SAP S/4HANA From a functional perspective, SAP MDG on SAP S/4HANA 1809 correlates to the SAP MDG 9.2 release based on ERP 6.0 Note that although no correlating SAP MDG on ERP release exists for the subsequent SAP S/4HANA 1909 release, many 1909 innovations have also been down-ported to earlier SAP MDG releases. First of all, companies need to be aware that master data is a company asset that needs to be protected. Companies need to determine which master data objects are relevant, how the corresponding models and initial data quality standards need to be. Then there needs to be an alignment on general maintenance and distribution processes, and only after that comes the question of how this can be achieved and supported with software. Typical Approaches to Master Data Management Figure 11: Central Governance and Distribution / de-Central Ownership and Consolidation In companies' system landscapes we typical see two main patterns: First, there are systems that are not under central governance, in which master data is created and maintained de-centrally. And there are systems, that are under central governance, meaning that also master data is managed centrally. SAP Master Data Governance covers both approaches: Central Governance Companies are seeking at master data consistency at the point of master data creation and change (proactive master data management): This means that you put specific master data under central governance which means that this master data is created or changed by a defined expert team who complete the records in a staging area where business rules and validations along with the domain-expertise from subject matter experts are used to complete the data and make sure that it is consistent by the time of activation and replication to subscribing systems. Consolidation Is used to get master data clean in landscapes where master data is managed de- centrally. This means that you identify duplicate master data spreading across de-central systems, create the golden record out of these, and manage the key mapping information (reactive master data management). In addition, Data Quality Management Is used in both approaches to continuously monitor your master data quality to achieve and keep high standards. This means that you define business rules, put these into operation and actively monitor the quality of your master data and seamlessly remediate records if needed. 10 © Copyright. Central Governance enables you to: Provide central ownership of master data in line with a company’s business rules and processes. Work with out-of-the-box master domains or use the built-in framework to create your own master data domains. Put change request-based processing of master data in place in your enterprise with integrated workflow, staging, approval, activation, and distribution. Deploy MDG as a separate hub system, or co-deploy it with SAP S/4HANA. In both cases, MDG can use SAP and company-specific business logic to create master data ready to be used in a company’s business processes. The process flow is as follows: 1. For example, an LoB user requests the creation or change of a master data object by opening a Change Request. This starts the central maintenance of master data in a staging area. 2. Entered data is validated by business rules (also open for integrating third party data providers). 3. Domain experts give their approval until the data is complete and ready for final approval. 4. Only then, the data can get activated and replicated to subscribing systems. 5. In the local systems, information that is locally relevant, and therefore not under central governance can be added. 14 © Copyright. Initial Check: View loaded data and check data quality based on back-end customizing. Optional Standardization: Validate and enrich address data. Use of BRF+ for standardization and enrichment. Option to connect to third party tools for standardization and enrichment. Match: Find duplicates based on customer-specific matching rules. Review match results. That is, extending data models, creating your own custom objects or adjusting processes and UX to tailor the central governance processes to your needs. Business Value: Pre-configured data models, user interface configurations, workflows, and data distribution are adjustable. You can extend the existing models with your own master data attributes, change the UI configuration to your users’ needs, and customize the workflow and distribution to define your specific governance processes. Hub Deployment: Master Data Governance can be deployed as a hub system with master data from one or more systems fed into the solution for verification before being replicated to the source systems and other systems. This deployment option can use SAP S/4HANA database technology or not depending on requirements. Advantages are: Fresh start with cleansed data. Not tied to other system maintenance cycles. No additional load on existing systems. Higher flexibility with mapping. Increased flexibility for master data lifecycle management. 2. Co-Deployment: Master Data Governance can be co-deployed on a number of local SAP S/4HANA* systems co-deployed on a single SAP S/4HANA*and reused across the landscape for central governance. Advantages are: No latency for data replication and no cross-system monitoring. No system integration required and no implementation and monitoring for replication. Examples include the following: Transactional: These follow an optimal design for fast transaction processing, such as purchase receipt entry. Transactional apps offer task-based access to tasks like change, create, display (documents, master records), or entire processes with guided navigation. Analytical: Provide tools required for analysis, graphs, charts, exploration, data mining, and drilldown. Analytical apps provide insight to action. They give you a visual overview of complex topics for monitoring or tracking purposes. Factsheet: Provide a 360 degree view of all key information related to a business subject. For example, enter an employee name and all information about that employee appears, such as working hours, vacation, pay, performance, manager, and awards. Factsheets give you the opportunity to search and explore your data. They provide a 360 degree view on essential information about an object, and contextual navigation between related objects. This is a good example of the SAP Fiori approach, which is to use a limited number of consistent interfaces to keep things simple. When developers create a new SAP Fiori application, they begin by selecting a template that is based on transactional, analytical, or factsheet, so they have a consistent look and feel. 36 © Copyright. It is the entry point to SAP Fiori apps on mobile and desktop devices. The launchpad displays a home page with tiles, which can display live status indicators, such as the number of open tasks. Each tile represents a business application that the user can launch. The SAP Fiori apps on the home page are arranged in tile groups. The user can personalize the layout of the home page, by grouping, moving, and removing tiles. The user can also add, delete, rename, and reorder groups. The ability to personalize the home page must be enabled in the launchpad configuration. SAP Cloud Platform Master Data Integration and SAP Master Data Governance are complementary when it comes to the provisioning of high-quality data in hybrid landscapes: Master data is part of a company's digital core, independently of on-premise or cloud-based landscapes. It must be available and ready to use for all consuming applications. Typically, master data is created within the Lines of Business. Therefore, a key prerequisite for the Intelligent Enterprise is that it integrates the right processes to make sure that master data is complete, accurate, and non-redundant, so that it's ready to be shared across organizational, operational and analytical systems in a hybrid landscape. In this context, SAP Master Data Governance on SAP S/4HANA is an enterprise master data management solution for hybrid landscapes (that is landscapes consisting of on-premise and cloud applications) providing consolidation, central governance, and master data quality management features, which makes it the single source of truth for master data. On top of this, in a cloud-centric context, SAP Cloud Platform Master Data Integration is a central access and master data integration layer that supports a harmonized data consumption by cloud and on-premise applications.
