Learning guide: Lesson 12 - People, Languages, and dialects in my city, province, AND REGION pp. 214-223 Ethnic Groups - A group of people who share similar traditions, culture, and language. ★ Major Ethnic Groups in Luzon ★ Ilocanos of Region 1: Ilocos Region ​ The Ilocanos are the third (3rd) largest ethnic group in the country. ​ Ilocanos are known for their humility and simple way of living. They are famous for being hardworking, too. ​ Their language is also called Ilocano, the third (3rd) most widely spoken language in the country based on the number of people using it. Tagalog of the National Capital Region (NCR) ​ The largest ethnic group in the country and most of them live in NCR. ​ Many Filipinos use Tagalog, the language of the Tagalogs. This is the reason why the national language, Filipino, was based on it. ​ Most Filipinos know how to speak Tagalog even though they do not belong to this ethnic group. Kapampangan of Region 3: Central Luzon ​ The seventh (7th) largest ethnic group in the country ​ Kapampangans are known for their delicious cuisines or dishes. ​ Their language is also called Kapampangan, the seventh (7th) most widely used language in the Philippines. Pangasinense of Region 1: Ilocos Region ​ The ninth (9th) largest ethnic group in the country. ​ Most of the Pangasinense live near Lingayen Gulf ​ Their language is called Pangasinense. Bicol/Bicolano of Region 5: Bicol Region ​ People from Bicol are known for their fondness for spicy food and food prepared or cooked with coconut milk. ​ Their language Bicol is the fifth (5th) most widely spoken language in the country. 1 ★ Major Ethnic Groups in Visayas ★ Waray from Region 8: Eastern Visayas ​ Most Warays live in Eastern Visayas, which is composed of Samar, Eastern Samar, Biliran, and Leyte. ​ Their language, Waray, is the sixth (6th) most widely spoken language in the Philippines. Cebuano from Visayas ​ The Cebuano or Sugbuanons are the second (2nd) largest ethnic group in the country. ​ The language of the Sugbuanons is also called Cebuano or Bisaya. ○​ It is the second (2nd) most widely spoken language in the country Ilonggo or Hiligaynon from Region 6: Western Visayas ​ The language of the Ilonggos is called Ilonggo or Hiligaynon ○​ It is the fourth (4th) most widely spoken language in the country. ★ Major Ethnic Groups in Mindanao ★ Mëranao of Region 10: Northern Mindanao ​ The word Meranao means "people of the lake." ○​ The ancestors of the Mëranao lived near Lanao Lake. ​ The Mëranao ethnic group is one of the largest Muslim groups in the Philippines. ​ Their language is also called Mëranao. ○​ It is the eleventh (11th) most widely spoken language in the country. Manobo of Region 13: Caraga Region ​ Some Manobos live near rivers or in the mountains and forests of Bukidnon, Cotabato, Davao, Misamis Oriental, and Surigao del Sur. ​ The word Manobo means "man." Sometimes it is pronounced as Manuvu or Minuvu. ​ The language of the Manobos in Agusan is called Minanubu. Maguindanaon of Region 12: SOCCSKSARGEN ​ There are many Maguindanaons in the provinces of South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao. ​ They compose one of the largest Muslim ethnic groups in the Philippines. ​ Their language is also called Maguindanaon. ○​ It is the ninth (9th) most widely spoken language in the country. Tausug of Bangsomoro Region ​ Most of the Tausugs can be found in the towns of Jolo, Indanan, Siasi, and Patikul in Sulu. ​ Their language is also called Tausug or Bahasa Sug. ○​ It is the tenth (10th) most widely used language in the Philippines. 2
