Caloocan City Science High School Special Mathematics 7 ALGEBRA Ma’am LISAMARI Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn. - Benjamin Franklin MAY WE HAVE FUN AND PRODUCTIVE LEARNING SESSIONS AHEAD. WELCOME TO ALGEBRA ☺ REVIEW OBJECTIVES Illustrate constants, variables, terms, and coefficients. Evaluate algebraic expressions. Determine types of polynomials. Algebraic expression 1 – Exponent (power) 2 – coefficient 3 – term 4 – mathematical operation 5 – constant (also considered as term) x, y- variables FUNDAMENTALS OF ALGEBRA Term - a term is a constant, variable or combination of both - it is separated by plus or minus 9𝑥𝑦 3 6𝑥𝑦 2 − 𝑥𝑦 − 3 Example: 10xy – 4 and + Algebraic Expressions – is an expression built up from integer constants, variables, and the algebraic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and exponentiation by an exponent that is a rational number) - an expression consist of one or more terms. Example: 2𝑎 −2 +5, 𝑎 2 − 4𝑏, 𝑜𝑟 √(𝑥 + 1) Polynomial (poly: many and nomial: part or terms) -is a special kind of expression where each term is constant, variable or a product of constant and variable. -if the power of every variable in each term is a whole number - consists of one or more terms. 2 Ex: 2𝑥 + 4𝑥 – 3𝑦 + 7 Note: All polynomials are algebraic expressions, but all algebraic expressions are not polynomial. When the variable is in the denominator 𝟓𝒂 𝒃 When the exponent is not a whole number 𝟐𝒂−𝟐 + 𝟓 When the variable is under a radical sign √(𝒙 + 𝟏) TYPES OF POLYNOMIALS Number of terms: Monomial (mono: one) 2 -one term ex: 10x, 9𝑥𝑦 , 7 Binomial (bi: two) 2 -two terms ex: 10x-4, 5𝑦 + 3 Trinomial (tri: three) -three terms ex: 10x+ 3y-5, -10𝑥 2 𝑦 2 − 8𝑥𝑦 + 7 Multinomial (multi:many) 2 -four or more terms ex: 2𝑥 + 4𝑥 – 3𝑦 + 7 Degree of polynomial - the degree of a polynomial is determined by the highest exponent that is with a variable/s in every term. Example: 1.) 3𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 − 10 therefore: the highest degree is 2. 2.) 5𝑥𝑦 3 + 17𝑥𝑦 + 9𝑦 2 + 9 therefore: the highest degree is 4. (add exponents in every term) Polynomial name with: Degree 0 - CONSTANT Degree 1 – LINEAR polynomial Degree 2 – QUADRATIC polynomial Degree 3 – CUBIC polynomial Determine the expressions according to type or number of terms, degree and polynomial name: Algebraic Number of terms or type of Degree of Polynomial Name expression polynomial (monomial, binomial, polynomial (Constant, Linear, trinomial, multinomial) Quadratic, Cubic) 4xy + 9 -15 7x2 – 2x2y + 8 x3 + x2 -5xy-12 LET’ TRY THIS! Determine the expressions according to type or number of terms, degree and polynomial name: Algebraic Number of terms or type of Degree of Polynomial Name expression polynomial (monomial, binomial, polynomial (Constant, Linear, trinomial, multinomial) Quadratic, Cubic) 7x2 + 25xy+2 25xy2 xy2 – 2x2y2 + 1 x+y SUMMARIZE THE LESSON THANK YOU ☺
