The Goal of a Research Report • The basic purpose of a good research report is to provide three kinds of information about the research study. – What was done – What was found – How the study is related to other knowledge in the area Gravetter | Forzano, Research Methods Behavioral Sciences, 6th Edition. © 2023 Cengage. All Rights Reserved. May not be scanned, copied or duplicated, or posted to a publicly accessible website, in whole or in part. Empirical Research Report • A written description of a research study that includes these components: – Review of the relevant background literature that led to the research study – Clear statement of the purpose of the research – Description of research methods used – Summary of the research results – Discussion and interpretation of the results Gravetter | Forzano, Research Methods Behavioral Sciences, 6th Edition. © 2023 Cengage. Title Page • Title page: manuscript’s first page – Running head (abbreviated title) and page number (1) – Title of the paper – Author name(s) (byline) and affiliations Gravetter | Forzano, Research Methods Behavioral Sciences, 6th Edition. © 2023 Cengage. The Elements of an APA-Style Research Report: Abstract • An empirical study’s abstract includes: – A one-sentence statement of the problem or research question – A brief description of the participants – A brief description of the research method and procedures – A report of the results – A statement about the conclusions or implications Gravetter | Forzano, Research Methods Behavioral Sciences, 6th Edition. © 2023 Cengage. All Rights Reserved. May not be scanned, copied or duplicated, or posted to a publicly accessible website, in whole or in part. An APA-Style Abstract Gravetter | Forzano, Research Methods Behavioral Sciences, 6th Edition. © 2023 Cengage. All Rights Reserved. May not be scanned, copied or duplicated, or posted to a publicly accessible website, in whole or in part. Introduction • Components of the introduction – A general introduction to the topic of the paper – A review of the relevant literature – A statement of the problem or purpose of the study with relevant variables clearly defined Gravetter | Forzano, Research Methods Behavioral Sciences, 6th Edition. © 2023 Cengage. All Rights Reserved. May not be scanned, copied or duplicated, or posted to a publicly accessible website, in whole or in part. Organization of the Introduction First, include an Introductory paragraph Second, Literature Review Gap in the Literature Present Study: Purpose of Study, Research Question, and/or Hypothesis Introduction Introductory Paragraph Your first paragraph should be an introduction to the broad topic of your paper. Include definitions of the main concepts discussed in your paper Introduction Literature Review Provide a literature review of prior research and theory that relates to your study. Make sure it is clear to the reader how information is related to your present study. Introduction Literature Review To make this section of your paper effective, you should explicitly relate information from various sources to each other and to your present study. Introduction Literature Review After you discuss past research, you should make it clear how your study is the next logical one, that your study improves upon past studies, that your study fills holes (gaps) left by the others. Introduction Gap in the literature: conflict in literature concerning findings or something that is not yet known. The purpose of the study is derived from the gap in the literature. Methods • A relatively detailed description of exactly how the variables were measured and how the research study was conducted • Subsections of the method section – Participants – Design – Materials – Procedure Gravetter | Forzano, Research Methods Behavioral Sciences, 6th Edition. © 2023 Cengage. All Rights Reserved. May not be scanned, copied or duplicated, or posted to a publicly accessible website, in whole or in part. Participants You should include information about the participants in your experiment. How many participants? Participants demographics - Age, gender, nationality of participants Are they college students? How were participants recruited for your study? Design State the chosen research design: correlational design, crosssectional design, experimental design Between-subject design Within subject design Measures Name and describe the scales/inventories/tasks/tests used to measure the variables of your study. For example: Procedure Include the details about what participants experienced in your study. You should include enough detail that someone could conduct your study using your paper as a guide. The order of this section should be the order of activities that participants experienced. Results • A summary of the data and the statistical analyses – Begins immediately following the method section—not starting on a new page – Provides a complete reporting of the findings, just the facts, with no discussion of the findings Gravetter | Forzano, Research Methods Behavioral Sciences, 6th Edition. © 2023 Cengage. Discussion • Restates the hypothesis, summarizes the results, and then presents a discussion of the interpretation, implications, and possible applications of the results – Begins immediately after the results section—not starting on a new page Gravetter | Forzano, Research Methods Behavioral Sciences, 6th Edition. © 2023 Cengage. References • Listing of complete references for all sources of information cited in the report – Organized alphabetically by the last name of the first author – Begins on a new page • Recommendation: include the digital object identifier (DOI) if it is available for a source Gravetter | Forzano, Research Methods Behavioral Sciences, 6th Edition. © 2023 Cengage. Figures • As a general rule, tables and figures supplement the text—they should not duplicate information that has already been presented in text form. – Any table or figure should be mentioned in the text by number. – The text should point out some of the more important aspects of the figure or table. • Each table or figure is on a new page.
